This session Marquez's biography and his works were reviewed.
The novel, "Memories of My Melancholy Whores" of Marquez were discussed.

Comments:

A brief but complete biography of Marquez which helped me to understand the atmosphere of the story better. I think the different points of view about the story was a positive point of this session.

1) I cannot call the feelings of the old man on the young girl, "love". I think it is just a pity about her conditions (an innocent poor girl who becomes unconscious due to hard work) and also his situation (an old man at 90's who is about to die). If he met her during his youth, would he have the same behavior and the same feeling? I don't think so.2) What kind of love is this that established without any dialogue and linguistic connection? In my opinion, the old man makes love just with his ideal imagination about the poor girl (as a lover) not her.3) What is the relationship between "love" and "sex"? Does love necessarily lead to sex? Where is the border between love and a profound friendship?

First of all we should define the complicated word LOVE.In my point of view ( which influenced by Freudian-Lacanian studies) Love is an investment of Libido(the freudian definition as the primer "instinct" and "energy" in an object. When we called this investment,"LOVE" is compeletly related to each person. For one the limit is "BISTOON" mountain and for oother is inviting for a coffee. There is no other "rule" to draw the limits for considering a relationship " Love" or not Love!Of course when the Investments is too high (according to individual) He/She call that feeling ;Love! The limit and feeling alter from time to time and relation to relation, but it always define as LOVE. So what the Old man feel, according to him was Love. I can't discard it with my own rules because he felt it. And for that feeling there is no need for communication or verbal relation, it is just a feeling.About the relation of the Love and sex, I can say that the primary energy is the same,Libido. Although because of our mystical culture and our respect to Love in literature and ERFAAN, we draw a holly boarder around the "Love" but I should say that there is an straight connection between sex and love. No matter what kind of love it is. I should just re-clarify that here with the word sex/Libido I mean that primary energy that all the other behavioral habits result from it. About the Mother or parental love the story is the same but the explanation is a bit more complicated.

Thank you Pasha.Based on your explanation, it seems love has personal definition for everybody and in this case, discussion would be meaningless.

About us

CaféLitt is not a place; it is a gathering of minds. We are a group of mostly Persian young students, scholars and professionals who gather every Thursday evening around 19h00 to discuss various subjects and share different ideas, ranging vastly from history to science, from literature to fine arts. We started these gatherings on Jan 17th, 2006 with 5 people and have reached an average weekly audience of about 40 people. Each week, one of us takes the responsibility of presenting a topic for about an hour in a subject s/he is intimately familiar with or has an expertise in. Afterwards, the evening turns into a discussion forum and all members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask their question(s) and share their points of view.

Some new and exciting ideas were born out of CaféLitt sessions. We have started a series of monthly meetings called CaféCinema during which a movie is presented and discussed in some detail afterward. This year's program of CaféCinema revolves around the history of Iranian cinema. Some Cinema students hold these sessions (mainly conducted in English) on the last Sunday of each month.

Likewise, CaféLitt BookClub is an activity where people who like books decide to read a book each month and discuss it during a cozy Café session on the second Sunday of every month.

CaféTheatre is a series of semi-rehearsed sessions in which we select a play, divide the roles among different people and read the play from the text in front of an audience. Similar to other CaféLitt sessions, each CaféTheatre session will end with a discussion of that day's play.

CaféScience and CaféPhilo are our plans for near future. The purpose of CaféScience is to provide a forum for the public discussion and understanding of all scientific findings and ideas, with an emphasis on new, interesting and publicly relevant topics. During CaféPhilo sessions, we will talk about philosophy, its history and all its related aspects.

CaféLitt is pen to all comments, suggestion and new ideas. CaféLitt provides an unparalleled opportunity for learning about culture, science and philosophy in a relaxed and friendly environment, and for sharing your knowledge and expertise with like-minded members of your community.

CafeLitt is a nonpartisan, nonreligious and nonpolitical entity.
